Each week, I'm planning to post about some of my (current) favorite things; it could be anything really-- creative business tools, pretty decor trends or favorite new restaurants or coffee shops. Given that the latter is absolutely one of the reasons I get out of bed every day (D.C. coffee shops have it going on lately), I thought I'd start with that. So here it is; a round up of three my favorite places in D.C. to caffeinate.
Now, I'm slightly biased, as I spent a summer working with these wonderful people (learning to make latte art was a serious life goal of mine), but IMO the experience in each of their cafes is really unparalleled. Whether popping in for a coffee to go at The Shay, or sitting and working for hours at The Roastery or in Chinatown, the staff is always helpful and cheery, and their coffee is just bananas. My personal recommendation: no matter the season, try the cold brew, and for a little somethin' extra- add a seasonal, house-made syrup, like their gingerbread syrup. Trust me.
2. Pineapple & Pearls
I've never met a pineapple I didn't like, and with this spot being just a 15 min or so walk from my apartment, it's a total win. It's also maybe (pronounced: definitely) one of the most Instagram worthy coffee shops in the city. From the tiled floors, to the gorgeous chandelier, to the super minimal menu, you'll wish the space only had more seating so you could stay and admire it all day. PLUS if you're lactose intolerant, like yours truly, they have amazing house made almond, hazelnut and PISTACHIO milk. Seriously, try a nut milk latte and be sure to grab their namesake pastry; it's like a cinnamon bun, except with pineapple filling instead of cinnamon, and topped with little sugar pearls. I mean, COME ON.
Anytime I have a meeting with... well really anyone, I always suggest we hit up Slipstream. Located right near 14th and P St. it's centrally located to most, and full of large communal tables, as well as smaller, more personal nooks to hole up and bang out some emails. The entire space, with skylights allowing natural sunlight in all day, is both calming, and inspiring; the perfect place to plan out your week or to dream up new business ventures and projects with creative friends. Also, while the coffee is consistently delicious, and worthy of inclusion in this post, I just have two words... Avocado. Toast. This place has some of the best in the city; thick farmhouse bread with perfectly ripe avos, poached eggs and a goat cheese mousse- yeah I'll say that again, goat. cheese. mousse. Get your booty down there ASAP-you're welcome in advance.
To be totally honest, I could write this post 100 different ways, as I have about a million favorite coffee shops. Each has their own perks and special features. It's likely you'll see another Coffee edition of this series in the future, and I'd love some suggestions; What is your favorite coffee shop in the DMV?
